AFFTON • Adam Trunko, Alexander Stewart and the rest of the seniors on the Chaminade hockey team were in seventh grade the last time the Red Devils beat division rival CBC.

Until now.

Trunko scored twice and had an assist and Timothy Delaney had a goal and an assist to lead Chaminade to a 5-3 win over CBC at Affton Ice Rink on Friday night.

Tyler Brown and Stewart also scored for the Red Devils and Hampus Blomdahl made 32 saves.

The last time Chaminade (12-4-3) beat CBC, the four-time defending MSCHA champion, was Jan. 18, 2013. The Cadets went 11-0-2 against the Red Devils since.

“I think our team has really been building the last four years,” Trunko said. “We showed out here that we’ve come together not only skill-wise, but chemistry-wise and team-wise we’ve really come together. I think we’re a team to watch out for.”

Jack Ritter, Riley Howse and Thomas Ramer scored for CBC (13-3-2), while Brogan Rumpf had a pair of assists. Ryan Yaeger and Matthew Smith combined for 19 saves.

Chaminade had to kill off a 10-minute penalty for the final 8 minutes 12 seconds of the game after Michael Shanahan received a fighting major and a 10-minute misconduct after getting into an altercation with CBC’s Maxwell Brown, who also got a 10-minute misconduct.

Instead of collapsing, the Red Devils rallied behind Shanahan.

“Our kids came out to play tonight,” Chaminade coach Kiley Hill said. “I’ve been in the game a long time and I’ve never seen a 10-minute power play or penalty kill for that matter.”

Trunko and Stewart were among the Red Devils playing extended shifts during the kill and Blomdahl made several saves.

“I honestly thought we were going to kill that off,” Trunko said. “Just the atmosphere and backing up Shanahan.”

Stewart’s empty net goal with 29 seconds left secured the win.

“We’re just thinking stay calm and were going to get it killed,” Stewart said. “Think positive thoughts because one breakdown could cost us the game.”

CBC needed just 15 seconds to get on the board as Ritter scored off of a face-off to make it 1-0.

Chaminade got the equalizer 29 seconds later as Delaney finished a perfectly executed 2-on-1 with Trunko.

Howse regained the lead for CBC with a slapper from the point at 4:11 of the first period. Ritter and Rumpf got the assists.

Delaney and Trunko struck again for Chaminade to tie it 2-2 midway through the first. Delaney sprung Trunko with a nice stretch pass. Yaeger got his pad on Trunko’s first shot, but Trunko buried the rebound.

Trunko’s second goal of the game with 4:58 left in the first and gave Chaminade a 3-2 lead. Trunko pounced on a rebound and roofed a backhander past Yaeger.

Both goalies shined in a scoreless second period.

Smith stood tall for CBC during an early Red Devils push and he also made a nifty glove save on a Brown deflection.

Blomdahl came up with two big saves for Chaminade on slap shots by Joseph Gagen and Howse.

Rumpf rang the post for the Cadets with a drive late in the second.

Brown gave Chaminade a 4-2 lead just 62 seconds into the third period. Brown shot the puck at a tough angle from the low right circle, but it found its way to the back of the net.

A Ramer slap shot got CBC back to within one at the 3:57 mark of the third.

CBC was without its top goalie Jack Caruso and two of its top scorers in Eric Brown and Michael Deeba, who were playing for their traveling teams. CBC coach John Jost said that was not an excuse.

“Our focus was on the 20 guys here and we had a good practice on Wednesday and thought we were ready, but we fell into some old habits,” Jost said. “We’ve got to fix it.”
